Paper Mill History

The Magnani paper mills date their origins back to the XV century when the first settlers developed the mill along the banks of the Pescia river, which was famous for its clear waters, an essential requirement for the production of paper.

Over the years, the Magnani paper mills have walked step by step with Italy's history, remaining in business to this day.

The Magnani mill began exporting their papers all over the world in the 18th century and could count among their customers most of Europe’s reigning families.  The state mints of many countries appreciated the quality of the security papers produced at the mills, guaranteed to be of the highest quality standards.

Among the mill’s customers, there was Napoleon Bonaparte who selected the mill to produce a special watermarked paper for the announcement of his wedding with Maria Luisa D’Austria - the original mold is still held at the mill.

The mill was also a supplier to the Italian Crown family of Italy for some specific papers and essential documents and agreements have been signed on those papers.

Over the years, established artists such as Picasso, De Chirico, Guttuso, Annigoni, Maccari, Bueno, Guarnieri, and Morandi, as well as writers like D’Annunzio, Giusti, and many others selected to have their papers produced by Magnani as a sign of distinction.
